Autorzy prezentują terytorialne aspekty zrównoważonego rozwoju: przyrodnicze, polityczne, kulturowe i gospodarcze. Złożoność zrównoważonego rozwoju w skali lokalnej i regionalnej jest łatwiejsza do zrozumienia na przykładach wdrażania procedur i działań kształtowanych przez różne interpretacje teorii zrównoważonego rozwoju.

La idea de globalización nos trae varias imágenes relacionadas tanto con la vida profesional y cotidiana, como, en general, con la organización social, política y al final también espacial.
Las manifestaciones de globalización en cada región y en cada lugar no son iguales y dependen de varios actores - medioambientales, económicos, sociales, políticos, culturales, etc. El desarrollo sostenible dentro del contexto de globalización muestra varias caras y varias alternativas de los caminos del desarrollo dentro del contexto local y regional.

Complexity of development of sustainable territory is easier to be understood on the basis of examples highlighting diverse sustainability issues. Therefore the implementation of procedures and activities is often being shaped by diverse interpretations of theories of sustainable development.

A collection of selected texts discusses various theories of development, sustainability, and spatial, industrial and social policies. The idea of globalization brings us several images related to both professional and daily life, as well as, in general, social, political and spatial organization.
The manifestations of globalization in each region and in each place are not the same and depend on a number of environmental, economic, social, political, cultural, etc. Sustainable development within the context of globalization shows several faces and several alternatives of development paths within the local and regional context.
This publication is the result of collaboration of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies of University of Warsaw, Poland with the University of Manizales, Colombia. Mirosława Czerny - geograf, profesor zwyczajny w Instytucie Studiów Regionalnych i Globalnych, kierownik Katedry Geografii Miast i Planowania Przestrzennego na Wydziale Geografii i Studiów Regionalnych Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, kierownik Zakładu Geografii Rozwoju i Planowania Przestrzennego.
W krajach tego regionu przebywała wielokrotnie jako stypendystka, a następnie w sumie ponad 6 lat była wykładowcą na uniwersytetach w Meksyku, Peru, Kolumbii, Argentyny, Brazylii, Wenezueli, Kostaryce i na Kubie. W ramach realizowanych projektów badawczych współpracowała z ośrodkami badawczymi w Chile, Ekwadorze, Paragwaju i w krajach Ameryki Środkowej.
Badania nad krajami rozwijającymi się prowadziła na Uniwersytecie w Tybindze (jako stypendystka Fundacji Alexandra von Humboldta), w Oksfordzie (w ramach stypendium PHARE) oraz na wielu uniwersytetach hiszpańskich, niemieckich i angielskich. Dwukrotnie prowadziła semestralne cykle wykładów na Uniwersytecie w Moguncji oraz cykle wykładów na Uniwersytecie Castilla-La Mancha w Albacete i na Universidad Complutense de Madrid.
Mirosławy Czerny poświęcone są zagadnieniom niedorozwoju, ubóstwa, zacofania wsi, dzielnicom marginalnym w wielkich miastach, planowaniu regionalnemu i lokalnemu, rozwojowi wielkich metropolii, rozwojowi zrównoważonemu, konfliktom politycznym i społecznym, społeczeństwu ryzyka. Za wkład w badania nad Ameryką Łacińską Universidad Nacional San Agustin de Arequipa w Peru nadał jej w 2007 roku tytuł doktora honoris causa, a w 2013 roku została uhonorowana medalem towarzystwa geograficznego w Limie w rocznicę 125-lecia jego istnienia.
